The larger dramas of parental divorce, poverty, and social collapse form the background to Anya’s childhood adventures, told in a vivid and immediate voice. The two novellas collected in the book, 35 July and This Is Not Certain, invite the reader to face alongside their heroine the sad, absurd, and deeply loving experience of growing up on the post-Soviet periphery.
