Description	"Ostrov" ("Island") is a new literary periodical in Russian, based in Venice. "Ostrov" publishes contemporary literature without segregating it by genre or method, while favoring the gesture imbued with reflections on fiction, the spatiality of language, and the materiality of writing. The journal defines itself as an émigré project, while deliberately rejecting the dichotomy between tamizdat ("published abroad") and zdesizdat ("published here"), creating a unified, remote literary space. From the editors’ introduction: "The journal was conceived at a moment when the language removed from the places it inhabits became troubling, on the one hand, simply because it continued to govern ways of thinking and speaking, and on the other, because its use required reattuning of its sound. The movements of body and speech had to isolate themselves on an island of imagination and, from lost or forgotten narratives, make their way toward the hidden sides of new processes and meanings. Ostrov registers the pain of new meanings, the materiality of the unspoken, and the rules and rituals of an unstable reality; it builds a bridge toward other spaces and zones where languages coexist; it catalogues approaches to writing as an act of imagination."
