Description	Sergei Eisenstein (1898–1948) was a legendary Soviet film director, art theorist and teacher, and one of the major innovators of world cinema. He was the first to turn montage from a simple technical joining of shots into a powerful artistic instrument for directing the viewer’s emotions. Unmade Things is a book conceived by Eisenstein in the mid-1930s and reaching the reader ninety years later. It is based on five film projects from 1930–1934. Scripts or libretti were written for all of them, all the projects were accepted for production, and one was almost entirely filmed, yet none was completed. The book itself, like the films, became an “unmade” thing. Today it is published in an expanded form, supplemented with what was absent from Eisenstein’s original plan: materials from the creative process, script and directorial developments, the author’s sketches, photographs and documents now available that explain the reasons why the productions remained unfinished, as well as commentary by Naum Kleiman. Eisenstein’s contemporaries considered these projects strange, dangerous, unprofitable, alien to “normal cinema” and therefore unnecessary for the viewer. Each of the five projects could have become a masterpiece of world cinema. Each reveals a new Eisenstein, unlike either the author of the early “tetralogy of the Revolution” — Strike, Battleship Potemkin, October, and The General Line — or the director of historical epics such as Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible.
