This was the title given by the publisher to the speeches of the Pacific chief Tuiavii of Tiavea, speeches that he did not deliver, but wrote down in draft form in his native language, from which they were translated. It was never Tuiavii’s intention to publish these speeches; they were intended solely for his Polynesian tribesmen. If we now, without his knowledge and against his will, pass them on to the reading public, it is only because it is valuable for us too, white and enlightened people, to know how we and our culture are seen through the eyes of a man still closely bound to nature. To fanatics of civilisation, his view of things may seem naive, childish and even foolish, but the more humble and reasonable reader will find that many of Tuiavii’s words give cause for reflection. He looks at objects and events in life with the honesty and truthfulness of a child, stumbles upon contradictions, discovers deep moral flaws and names them. What is the great value of European culture if it tears a person away from himself and makes him inauthentic and unnatural? |
