| Description | The Need for Roots is the final treatise by the philosopher Simone Weil (1909–1943). It began as an extended introduction to a proposed Declaration of Duties towards the Human Being, which Weil submitted to the legislative commission of de Gaulle’s Fighting France as an alternative to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789. In the course of writing, however, the treatise grew considerably: an analysis of the reasons for France’s defeat in 1940 developed into an outline of the country’s main historical tendencies from the late Middle Ages to the modern period. From the justification of duties, Weil moved towards the justification of her entire political philosophy, inseparable from her religious and ethical views. The result was a work that summed up the central concerns of everything she had written both before and during the Second World War: a final work, not confined to the political situation of its own time, but directed towards the future. |
