Shuster S. Showman: Vladimir Zelensky i vojna v Ukraine

Author Shuster S.
Title Showman: Vladimir Zelensky i vojna v Ukraine
Description Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, once a widely known actor, screenwriter, and producer in film and television, entered politics almost by chance. He won the 2019 election on the wave of success surrounding his series Servant of the People and on public fatigue with corruption in power and with the military standoff against pro-Russian separatists in Donbas. He promised voters peace and prosperity, yet soon faced Vladimir Putin’s determination to keep intervening in the domestic affairs of a neighbouring state, and then, in February 2022, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The former showman, however, stayed in Kyiv and led the resistance, becoming within a few months the full leader of a country at war.

For almost all of 2022, Simon Shuster, an American journalist of Russian origin and a correspondent for Time, spent time with Zelensky’s team in Kyiv, with rare access to the presidential compound on Bankova Street. There the idea for his book took shape: to tell how the president and those around him lived through the first months of the full-scale war. The book includes major events of that period, among them the battle for Kyiv, the tragedy of Bucha, the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region, and the liberation of Kherson, along with the background to those events and what remained outside daily war reporting.
