Saveljev S. Trojan. GULAG nashego vremeni

Author Saveljev S.
Title Trojan. GULAG nashego vremeni
Description This book is a chronicle of the unprecedented exposure of torture quietly accepted in Russian prisons. An ordinary young man from Belarus, Sergey Savelyev, ended up in a Russian prison after a fabricated drug case and at first went through the bloody hell of “re-education” himself. Later, after being assigned to work as an administrator in a prison hospital, he gained access to a vast video archive stored within the prison system. The recordings showed prisoners being beaten and raped with the knowledge of prison officials. Savelyev managed to copy the archive and bring it out after his release. He then made it public under the pseudonym “Trojan.” He also escaped retaliation from several Russian agencies. Most importantly, he remained what he had always been: a person unable to look at cruelty with indifference.

Sergey Savelyev was born in Minsk in 1989. In 2013 he was sentenced in Russia to nine years in prison on a fabricated case. After his release, he carried out 40 gigabytes of video evidence exposing torture in prison. The archive was published in September 2021. A month later he was placed on a wanted list, but by then he had already left the country and asked for political asylum in France. The French newspaper Libération called him “the Russian Snowden.”
