Description	A landmark text of the Thaw era about loneliness and alienation, Pkhents tells the story of an ordinary Soviet accountant who is, in fact, an alien living under another person’s name. Day after day he is forced to disguise himself, avoiding the threat of exposure, tormented by disgust at the crude physiology and petty concerns of his fellow citizens and neighbours in a communal apartment. He dreams of returning home, to his native planet, and protects the few remaining traces of it that he still possesses. Written in 1957, the story was first published in the West after the 1966 Moscow show trial in which two Soviet writers, Andrei Sinyavsky, writing as Abram Tertz, and Yuli Daniel, writing as Nikolai Arzhak, were sentenced to five and seven years in labour camps respectively for publishing their “slanderous” works in tamizdat. The later journeys of both the text and its author have expanded interpretations of Pkhents almost without limit, extending them to the experiences of dissidents, political prisoners, queer people, emigrants, and refugees. Pkhents is published here for the first time as a separate edition and in a new English translation.
