The novel Oblomov (1859) is the pinnacle of Goncharov’s creativity. The writer showed an amazing and paradoxical type of Russian person, making his name a household name. Some interpreted the novel as a satirical work, others noted both its lyrical beginning and subtle psychologism. This original and one-of-a-kind book is still controversial. “Each of the characters created by Goncharov is an ideal generalization of human nature,” noted D. S. Merezhkovsky. Goncharov’s novels are excellent examples of Russian prose of the mid-19th century, which have not lost their relevance for modern readers.
