Description	This book by the Czech philologist and translator Alena Machoninová is devoted to the life of the Gulag prisoner Elena (Hella) Frischer. Having found herself in Russia during the Stalinist Terror, she endured the execution of her husband and spent ten years in Sevzheldorlag in the Komi ASSR. She was imprisoned there from 1937 to 1947, arrested again in 1948, and later exiled to Syktyvkar from 1951 to 1956. After her release, she lived in Moscow. Working with Hella’s memoirs and letters, including her correspondence with Tamara Petkevich, a former prisoner of the same camp, and turning to her own experience of life in contemporary Russia, Machoninová reconstructs her heroine’s biography and inner world. The book reflects on homeland, home and language, above all on human dignity that survives every attempt to break it. The novel was named best book in the Prose category and received the major Czech literary prize Magnesia Litera in 2024, followed by the Visegrad Fund Prize in 2025.
