Saramago J. Pereboi v smerti

Author Saramago J.
Title Pereboi v smerti
Description José Saramago’s Death with Interruptions is a philosophical parable-novel about a country in which death suddenly stops functioning. People greet immortality as liberation from their deepest fear, but joy soon turns into confusion. Hospitals fill with those who have already reached the edge of life, and the state tries to govern an order that has lost its familiar foundation.

Saramago takes an impossible situation and shows how quickly society loses its balance without the familiar order of life and death. The Church, the authorities, insurance companies and the funeral business are forced to explain their own existence anew. Later, death returns to the country and begins sending violet letters in advance, naming the date of each person’s end. Saramago’s style is easily recognised by its long, flowing sentences and near-total departure from conventional dialogue formatting.

José Saramago was a Portuguese writer and Nobel Prize laureate in literature, known for his ability to join philosophical fantasy with sharp social satire.
