Aoyama N. Broshency

Author Aoyama N.
Title Broshency
Description They say that all Japanese literature resembles a dream. In the case of The Abandoned, it is a deep and calming dream, yet also unsettling in its own way. In Nanae Aoyama’s book, Yuko, an employee at a dry cleaner’s, is seized by obsessive anxiety over items of clothing forgotten by customers. Hoping to untangle the matter, Yuko moves through a fog, trying either to escape responsibility, to find peace, or simply to hide from the outside world. Things, Aoyama writes, have a terrifying power over a person; without them, a person is like an empty electric train between stations.

Nanae Aoyama (b. 1983) is one of the most notable Japanese writers of her generation. A laureate of the Akutagawa Prize and the youngest recipient of the Kawabata Prize, she is known for her attentiveness to the details of everyday life and her subtle sense of uneasy harmony.
