The invented world creates distance, though many details remain sharply recognisable. Little by little, the novel shows how a person grows used to violence, to the suffering of others, and to his own moral concessions. Its deepest concern lies in the hero’s inner change. What unfolds here is a story about the temptation of self-justification and about the quiet way war alters the limits of what a person can accept. |
