| Description | A monograph by artist and art historian Igor Smekalov, chief research fellow at the State Tretyakov Gallery, is devoted to the history of the early Soviet avant-garde and to the movement of artists from the capitals to the provinces, followed by the influence that artists from the periphery in turn exerted on the artistic life of Moscow and Petrograd. The author reconstructs the history of selected State Free Art Workshops (GSKhM) in the Volga and Ural regions, including those in Orenburg, Buzuluk, Samara, and Yekaterinburg, and traces their connections with like-minded artists in Vitebsk, Smolensk, Penza, Perm, and other cities, as well as in Moscow and Petrograd. The activities of the regional Workshops are presented as an independent artistic phenomenon within the avant-garde, closely reflecting the distinctive conditions of the War Communism period.
The appendix contains the first complete transcription of the proceedings of the First All-Russian Conference of Teachers and Students of the GSKhM, held in Moscow from 2 to 9 June 1920, making it possible to follow the development of the avant-garde reform of artistic education in detail. |
