Description	The catalogue “EXIT — EXIT” was published to accompany Erik Bulatov’s exhibition of the same name at Moscow’s pop/off/art gallery, organised to mark the artist’s ninetieth birthday. The exhibition included more than twenty large graphic sheets produced between 2017 and 2022 — the largest works on paper Bulatov had ever created. In them he continues his long-standing investigation of the relationship between the physical surface of an image and the illusory space that appears to open behind it. Text plays a particularly important role. Words and short phrases become image, spatial construction and semantic statement at once. The works form a sequence including “Forward”, “It’s Not So Scary”, “Friend Suddenly Enemy” and “EXIT — EXIT”; red is primarily associated with the surface closest to the viewer, while black is associated with depth. The new works enter into dialogue with key pieces from earlier decades, including “Entrance — No Entrance” and “Danger”.
