Muratov P. Rimskie pis'ma

Muratov P. Rimskie pis'ma

Author Muratov P.
Title Rimskie pis'ma
Description This volume brings together for the first time, with extensive commentary, Pavel Muratov’s cycle of essays “Roman Letters”, originally published throughout 1926 in the Paris émigré newspaper “The Latest News”. The texts directly continue the themes of his celebrated “Images of Italy”, but were written in a different era and allow the reader to see Italy through Muratov’s eyes after the First World War, at a moment when the classical artistic heritage was coming into increasingly visible conflict with modern mass civilisation. Muratov writes about the new Rome, regionalism, Venice, contemporary theatre and painting, Russian-Italian cultural connections and the everyday life of the country.

In addition to the “Roman Letters” themselves, the volume includes Muratov’s articles on contemporary Italian painting and his foreword to the third edition of “Images of Italy”, as well as texts by Nikolai Aseev, Archimandrite Cyprian Kern, Patrizia Deotto and Mikhail Talalay, placing Muratov’s legacy within a broader historical and cultural context.
