| Description | The catalogue “Yuri Zlotnikov: Signal System” was prepared for the artist’s major solo exhibition at the State Tretyakov Gallery. The exhibition brought together around seventy works from the celebrated “Signal System” series and approximately twenty earlier “Proto-Signals”. The book contains art-historical essays, a catalogue of works and biographical material tracing the formation and development of one of the most unusual artistic methods in Soviet post-war art. From the late 1950s onwards, Zlotnikov investigated how elementary forms, colour, the position of a sign on the page and relationships between individual elements could provoke physical and emotional responses in the viewer. The artist regarded his practice almost as a laboratory experiment and sought to create a kind of alphabet of visual signals. The catalogue demonstrates how the initially minimalist language of the “Signals” later developed into a more complex system of signs and expressive compositions. |
