Author Kozlov D.
Title Novyj Jel' Lisickogo i russkij avangard
Description Lazar Lissitzky (1890–1941) opens up the visual theme of the “new” in avant-garde art. His figurine The New One (1920–1921) is a design for a mechanical puppet, a character in the futurist opera Victory over the Sun. The artist created a dynamic image-construction made up of two beings, a complex metaphor still awaiting interpretation. In his new book, Dmitry Kozlov attempts to interpret the figurine The New One as an image that underwent a complex symbolic evolution in Lissitzky’s work. The author examines the concepts of the “new” and the “new human being”, traces the transition from positivism and Darwinism to the philosophy of the androgyne as a higher being, and builds connections between the doctrine of human supernature, the Baroque attitude towards emblematic structures, the popularity of esoteric knowledge in the Silver Age and the avant-garde’s understanding of corporeality, in order to show the radicalism of Lissitzky’s project against the background of other experiments in European art of the same period.
