| Description | In the spring of 2024, musician and writer Pavel Kushnir was arrested by the FSB and died in prison as a result of a dry hunger strike. Shortly before his arrest, he completed a series of radio programmes devoted to Chopin’s mazurkas. Alongside his analysis of the musical texts, Kushnir offered free-ranging associations inspired by the music, reflecting on resistance to fascism, emigration, imperialism and the ideas of 1968, and speaking about his favourite poets and film directors.
This book brings together transcripts of every programme in the series Mazurkas on Wednesdays, accompanied by commentaries from musicologists, as well as an interview with Pavel Kushnir. Pavel Kushnir was born and raised in Tambov and graduated from the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory. He subsequently worked with philharmonic organisations in Kursk and Kurgan, and in 2023 became a soloist with the Birobidzhan Regional Philharmonic. In May 2024, Kushnir was detained on charges of “publicly inciting terrorism”, an accusation based on his anti-war statements. He died at the age of 39 in Pre-Trial Detention Centre No. 1 in Birobidzhan on 28 July 2024 as a result of a dry hunger strike. |
