Description | The first volume is dedicated to the USSR. It is compiled from my collection of “vernacular photography.” These are images by unknown authors: from family albums, wall newspapers, anonymous photo studios, and institutional reports. From the Revolution to Perestroika. People photographed each other — without ambition, without censorship, without artistic intent. Just for memory: a new coat, a holiday meal, a vacation, a wedding, a funeral. Over time, these photos became testimony. Sometimes more accurate and honest than the work of professional photojournalists. Almost all of these images are staged. But with time, even the very act of staging becomes a document. The second volume is about Russia. These are my own photographs, taken from Moscow to Kamchatka over a quarter century of work. It is not a portrait of the country, but rather a collection of observations. Five chapters — East, Center, North, South, and Capitals. It's a journey through the space of Russia, just as the first volume is a journey through time. |
