Author Barthes R.
Title Camera lucida. Kommentarij k fotografii
Description Camera Lucida: A Commentary on Photography (1980) by Roland Barthes is one of the first fundamental studies of the nature of photography and simultaneously an homage to the author's late mother. His interest in a photograph from 1870, which he stumbled upon by chance, sparked Barthes's desire to discover the essential characteristic that distinguishes a photograph from all other images. Confronted with the question of classifying and systematizing photographs, the philosopher develops his own phenomenology, introducing the concepts of Studium and Punctum. Studium denotes the cultural, linguistic, and political interpretation of a photograph, while Punctum represents the purely personal emotional meaning that allows for a direct connection with the photographic image.
