Description	Yury Lotman was a world-renowned scholar, philologist and cultural theorist whose works have been translated into all major European languages. His legacy is exceptionally large and includes about eight hundred scholarly and popular works. He came to lead an entire academic school that developed new methods for analysing literary texts, methods alien to official Soviet literary studies. Like many outstanding scholars, Lotman found it difficult to stay within the limits of a single discipline, and his research concerned literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the history of Russian social thought, art theory and cultural studies. In the late 1980s, he gave televised lectures on the everyday life and traditions of the Russian nobility, and these lectures later became the basis for Conversations on Russian Culture. His interest in this subject was closely connected with his study of Russian literature from the first third of the nineteenth century. Thanks to Lotman, the Pushkin era opens before us through classical texts and through the realities of everyday life: the Table of Ranks, home education, the high-society ball, the duel, card-playing and much else. The range of documentary sources, the breadth of interpretation and the clarity of exposition are qualities that consistently mark Lotman’s studies, which still attract specialists as well as a broad reading public.
