Description	How was medieval thought structured, and how did it take shape in particular statements and literary images? In search of an answer, Oleg Voskoboynikov examines the expressive means of Latin literature produced in Western Europe between the eighth and fourteenth centuries. Turning to poetry and prose created at royal courts, universities, cathedral schools and monasteries, the author seeks to reconstruct the medieval worldview, shaped by Christianity without being entirely confined to it. He organises the study into four parts entitled Time, World, Human Being and Elusive Beauty. In each section, broad historical and cultural perspectives are combined with close analysis of Latin texts, sentence structures and the meanings of individual words. Particular attention is given to the difficulties involved in conveying both the meaning and form of medieval Latin discourse in Russian, as well as the ideas behind it concerning humanity’s place in the world, God and beauty. Oleg Voskoboynikov is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, a medievalist, and the academic director of the Stradarium project of Stradaye Srednevekovye.
