The Tale of Terror became one of the earliest major histories of the Gothic novel and was admired by H. P. Lovecraft. The later works in horror genre inherited many of the techniques created in this period. Birkhead allows the reader to see those techniques at the moment of their formation and to understand why the old Gothic tradition continues to shape modern cultures of fear. |
