| Description | Walter Benjamin’s The Arcades Project is a unfinished work on nineteenth-century Paris, its urban life, and the birth of modernity. The text was written over many years and, after the author’s death, was assembled from his surviving manuscripts. It is an unusual book, built as a montage of quotations from books, newspapers, memoirs, advertising brochures, and other printed material of the period, together with Benjamin’s own reflections. He looked at Paris through shop windows, advertising, fashion, architecture, and everyday gestures, trying to grasp how a new age begins to think and perceive itself. The Arcades Project is both a kind of archive of urban memory and an experiment in a new way of writing about culture. The translation from German and French was prepared by Sergey Fokin and Vera Kotelevskaya. |
