| Description | The correspondence between Alexey Panteleev, who wrote under the pen name L. Panteleev and was the author of The Watch, The Packet and The Republic of ShKID, and Lydia Chukovskaya lasted for more than fifty years, from 1929 to 1987. They met in 1929 at the editorial office of the Leningrad children’s publishing house Detizdat, where Lydia Korneyevna worked as an editor and edited Panteleev’s story The Watch. Their correspondence began soon afterwards and became especially intensive after the war, when Lydia Korneyevna moved to Moscow and Alexey Ivanovich remained in Leningrad. More than eight hundred letters by both correspondents have survived, of which about six hundred are included in this book in abridged form. The pages selected for publication are those of particular interest for the history of Russian literature. The letters are rich in literary events, contain portraits of many contemporaries, including M. Zoshchenko, E. Schwartz and S. Marshak, and respond to the literary debates of those years. Taken together, they recreate the literary life of their time. |
