Description	Osip Mandelstam (1891–1938) is one of the best-known Russian poets of the twentieth century worldwide. During his lifetime he had the reputation of being a “poet for the chosen few”, and after his tragic death in the Vtoraya Rechka transit camp he was almost forgotten; today, however, Mandelstam is honoured and loved by a very wide circle of readers. He himself foretold his eventual fate in a letter to the literary scholar and prose writer Yuri Tynyanov, sent in January 1937: “...lately I have become understandable to absolutely everyone. That is menacing. For a quarter of a century now, mixing the important with trifles, I have been bearing down upon Russian poetry; but soon my poems will merge with it and dissolve into it, changing something in its structure and composition.” The main aim of this edition is to bring together all currently known testimonies by contemporaries about the life of Osip Mandelstam, with the exception of the monumental books by Nadezhda Mandelstam and Emma Gerstein, which are extensively quoted in the commentary. The two volumes contain more than 130 texts, with almost the same number of shorter testimonies included in the commentary. These are memoirs, diaries, letters and even denunciations written by Mandelstam’s acquaintances, all of which vividly characterise the poet’s personality. Many of these texts and fragments had previously appeared in periodicals or small-circulation scholarly collections, but had never been published together under one cover. The edition includes a page-by-page historical and literary commentary and an annotated index of the persons mentioned. The appendix to the second volume contains poems by Mandelstam’s contemporaries in which his image is captured. The unique illustrative material consists of more than 650 photographs, drawings, printed editions and documents.
