Nemtsov entered public life in the late 1980s, at the height of Gorbachev’s perestroika. In the 1990s he became governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and rose rapidly through the political ranks; for a time, Boris Yeltsin even regarded him as a possible successor. In the 2000s, Nemtsov moved into opposition to the government, and on 27 February 2015 he was assassinated on Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge, directly opposite the Kremlin. Nemtsov was both a participant in and a witness to all the major events of Russia’s recent history — from the first free elections and the attempted coup of 1991 to the Bolotnaya Square protests of 2011–2012 and the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Based on hundreds of interviews, as well as archival material and memoirs, the book is also a journey through thirty years of contemporary Russian history. By following Nemtsov through the key turning points of the country’s recent past, the author seeks to answer a central question: how and why did Russia lose the freedom it had gained?
