Title Smetaja zaprety: ocherki russkoj seksual'noj kul'tury
Description Women’s sexual lives have always been regulated by institutions of power and society, and attitudes towards them reveal much about the morals and cultural norms of a given era and country. The central subject of this collective monograph is the evolution of ideas about female sexuality in Russia from the eleventh to the twentieth century. In describing the everyday lives of women from different social groups, the authors draw on a wide body of unique historical sources: from church collections of penances to medical forms from Russian maternity hospitals, from court records to various forms of ego-documents. According to the researchers, the intimate sphere of life is shaped not only by external attempts at censorship and control, but also by the restrictions people impose upon themselves.

How did the sexual education of noble boys and girls differ? How did society in practice regard “nesoblyudikhi”, women who had not preserved their virginity before marriage? How did women at different times try to avoid pregnancy? Through answers to these and other questions, we can not only understand the sexual culture of the past, but also discern the trajectories along which it may develop in the future. The authors of the book are A. Belova, N. Mitsyuk, and N. Pushkareva, historians and anthropologists, and members of the Russian Association of Researchers in Women’s History.
