| Title | storija Rossii XIX stoletija. Tom II: 1815 - 1825 god |
| Description | The History of Russia in the Nineteenth Century by Doctor of Historical Sciences and Professor Andrei Zubov is not a chronological retelling of events, but a reflection on the causes that brought “historical Russia” closer to possible ruin. Professor Zubov argues that the catastrophe of the early twentieth century had roots far deeper than is usually assumed. Careful study of those causes helps us understand the past more fully and shed light on the present.
The second volume deals with what may have been the most glorious decade in Russian history: 1815–1825. It was a decade of complete peace. For Russia, all wars were over. Europe recognised the authority of the country that had freed it from Napoleon’s rule. Emperor Alexander was called the “Agamemnon of Europe”, likening him to the leader of the Achaean kings in the legend of the Trojan War. Alexander established a constitutional monarchy and the Bourbon dynasty in France, and gathered constitutional Poland under his sceptre. He prepared a constitution for Russia as a whole and the emancipation of the serfs. Holy Scripture was translated into more than forty languages of the Empire, including modern Russian, and distributed in hundreds of thousands of copies. Russian society seemed to be at an extraordinary height. Yet this brilliant reign ended in a strange and absurd way. Why? |
