Description	The protagonist of Natasha Grin’s novel “Not a Place” travels to Meudon, a suburb of Paris where Marina Tsvetaeva spent a substantial part of her years in exile. Walking up towards the Observatory Park, studying old photographs and trying to recover the memories preserved by local residents, the narrator searches for traces of another person’s life, but gradually realises that Tsvetaeva’s story offers a way of approaching her own concerns — separation, emigration, putting down roots and the impossibility of definitively identifying a place one can call home. At the same time, another historical investigation unfolds around Konstantin Rodzevich — Tsvetaeva’s lover, a participant in the Spanish Civil War and the French Resistance whose biography remained little known for many years — and the fate of his personal archive in Paris in the late 1980s. The novel combines autofiction and documentary prose while reflecting on the limits of historical reconstruction: what can actually be recovered from the surviving traces of another person’s life?
