Kochan M. Horeja

Author Kochan M.
Title Horeja
Description Chorea is autofiction about parenthood, genes, the acceptance of illness, and the particularities of those close to us. Marina learns that her father, a radiobiologist who tested soil after the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, died of a rare disease: Huntington’s chorea. Pregnant and seized by panic at the thought of passing the disease on to her son, she reflects on her perception of herself as a mother, reconsiders her father’s role in her life and the history of their mutual estrangement. Trying to understand what kind of person her father was, Marina touches on the value of human life in the Soviet Union, unspoken family traumas and shame for one’s loved ones.

Marina Kochan (b. 1989) is a contemporary Russian writer, poet, journalist and curator of literary projects.
